Reference Books
These are actual books made available through the Internet (which is a series of tubes). As they are reference books, they are not meant to be read or listened to from cover to cover like our downloadable audiobooks. Instead they are designed to be easily searched for particular bits of information.
However, the ebooks are distributed by different companies so there are different ways of signing in, searching, organizing and reading the materials depending upon the vendor. Right now, the library has access to electronic reference books through three vendors: Gale (the GVRL); Grolier; and Salem Press.
GVRL (Gale Virtual Reference Library)
– This vendor has our broadest selection. Titles range from the 23 volume Encyclopedia of World Biography, to VideoHound's Golden Movie Retriever to the Gale Encyclopedia of U.S. History, and to various Eyewitness Top 10 Travel Guides. Use the GVRL link to search all 79 titles, comprising 157 individual volumes, at once. You can also search the GVRL History, Literature and Travel titles individually. Must have a Larchmont card for at–home access. Use the "widget" below to search the entire GVRL directly from this page.
- Salem History
– Use this if you are looking for primary sources or for criminals. There are three titles: Milestone Documents in American History; Milestone Documents of American Leaders; and Great Lives from History: Notorious Lives.
- Grolier – three different encyclopedias tailored to different age levels. At home access and In–library use.

- The New Book of Knowledge – elementary school and higher
