MAY 8, 2009

The Larchmont Public Library Board of Trustees Subcommittee met on May 8, 2009 at 9:30 AM. Present were Board Chair Miriam Curnin, Trustees Pamela Dubitsky, Joan Macfarlane, Maureen LeBlanc, and Carolyn Parlato, and Library Director Diane Courtney. The group considered additional carpet samples but made no decision at this time.

Board Chair Curnin reported the conversation with Architect Richard Hein, who has offered to return $62,000 of the fees paid him since schematics and design phases are in process; there would be a cap on his fees based on construction cost of $2,250,000, which all thought was fair and provided a basis for budget purposes.

Architect Hein joined the meeting at this time, and reviewed the existing plans. These include structural framing on the lobby that is a solid cube; there would also be a floating circular canopy. In addition, the lobby will have a stucco exterior, some whimsical windows on the first floor with a corner entry, and will be bumped in to allow adequate exterior pathway. The rear will have squared bump outs, and, on the first floor, the doorway to the Village Center will be bumped in to permit the second floor to form a natural canopy. The handicapped entrance provides some concern as the original ramp may not be as serviceable as desired, necessitating a second door on the bumpout.

Architect Hein also said that he is investigating new fiberglass windows for the project that have equal R-factors but are less expensive. In response to questions, he noted that Marvin and Pella are manufacturing them.He also noted that he has moved to new offices at 132 Larchmont Avenue.

Lt. Caparelli from LFD is on vacation until May 18. Since Richard Hein wishes to get their approval before submitting the variance to New York State on the egress and this would delay construction documents, he agreed to add an additional stair as an add alternate to the plans.

The meeting adjourned at 11:55 AM. The next Special Meeting of the Library Board Subcommittee will be Friday, May 15 at 11:30 AM.

Respectfully submitted,

Diane Courtney
