The Larchmont Public Library provides public access to information of all types in a wide range of formats to meet its mission of providing educational, recreational and informational materials to the community.Electronic resources, including the Internet, are available as reference tools to supplement and complement the collections.
The Internet is a fundamental resource for a wide range of information that expands the scope of resources available to users. It is an unregulated medium that changes constantly and unpredictably. The Internet is a free and open forum for expression, including view-points that may be deemed strange, unorthodox or unpopular. The Larchmont Public Library cannot be held responsible for the content of sites on the Internet and does not endorse any opinion stated on the Internet.
Since not all sits on the Internet are accurate, current or complete, users must exercise critical judgment to evaluate the validity and appropriateness of the information found. Librarians will be glad to assist users in evaluating the sources of this information.
In providing access to electronic resources, the Larchmont Public Library is guided by the following American Library Association statements on access to information:
The Library respects a patron's right to both confidentiality and privacy. Patrons are cautioned that the Internet is not a secure medium and all transactions, files and communications may be subject to unauthorized access by third parties. The Library, however, will not release information on the use of electronic resources by members of the public except as required by law.
The Library seeks to provide an atmosphere conducive to the best use of its resources. To this end, it strives to balance the rots of users to access all types of information resources with the rights of other users and staff to work in a public setting free from disruptive sounds and visuals. Patrons are reminded that library computer terminals are located in public areas which are shared with library users and staff of all ages, backgrounds and sensibilities. Individuals are expected to consider this diversity and respect the sensibilities of others when accessing information or images.
The Library affirms the right and responsibility of parents and legal guardians to guide their children's use of all library resources, including the Internet. Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their children's use of the Internet and to convey their expectations for their children's use of this resource. Filters are not used on the Library's computers, in part because they have been shown to be ineffective at blocking access to information that might be deemed objectionable while also blocking access to valid and useful information.
Use of the Internet for activities that violate local, state or federal laws is
prohibited.
Many of the materials contained on the Internet, World Wide Web or electronic resources are
copyrighted. Compliance is the responsibility of the user. Patrons may only make copies
allowable by copyright laws or licensed software agreements.
The Larchmont Public Library expressly disclaims any liability or responsibility arising from access to or use of information obtained through its electronic resources.
The Larchmont Public Library is committed to providing an environment free from sexual or other harassments. Do not display on screens and / or printers materials that would be inconsistent with such an environment.
The workstations may not be used for commercial activities including sale or purchase of goods or services; terminals are not secure for these purposes.
Internet use by the public does not include access to online chat rooms, File Transfer Protocol (ftp), or downloading to any device other than a printer.
All users of Internet-access terminals must sign in at the reference desk before they begin using the equipment. When other users are waiting, users then on terminals will be asked to leave in the following order: 1)users of e-mail, then 2)users of information sources who have been on for the longest duration.
Workstations will be shut down 15 minutes before closing.
