Online catalog is back online
The Westchester Library System has finished work on the Catalog so all our patrons can go back to looking up stuff, placing holds on it and renewing stuff they have checked out. We do suggest that eBook readers and their ilk read the “read more” below.
The upgrades include the ability to download some eBooks and eAudiobooks directly from the catalog. However, the online catalog will only show digital content owned by WLS and distributed by Overdrive and OneClickDigital. Since we have purchased titles that are only available to Larchmont Public Library patrons and there are other services (like Freeding) besides Overdrive and OneClickDigital, we strongly recommend that our patrons do not use the online catalog to search for eBooks and other downloadable content at this time. Use the links on our eBooks, etc. page instead.
For example, the publisher of The Goldfinch, by Donna Tartt, refuses to sell eBooks to consortia like WLS, but it will sell to individual libraries like us. Larchmont has purchased an eBook copy for our patrons for distribution through Overdrive. The catalog will never show that the copy exists. The only way to find the book is to go to Overdrive and sign in with your 14 digit Larchmont Public Library barcode.
Even if WLS has purchased a title, the catalog may indicate all the copies are checked out. However there may be an additional copy available because we purchased it. For example, right now the wait for a WLS eBook of Gone Girl, by Gillian Flynn is a little over 30 weeks. However, at the time of this writing, a Larchmont patron can go to Overdrive, sign in, and download our copy right now.
Finally, signing in to the online catalog is not the same thing as signing in to Overdrive or Freeding or Zinio, etc. This upgrade is a first step in that direction, however. Someday, somewhere, some upgrade will let us get everything at one place with one search. We can only hope.
