Storage already?

Eagle-eyed patrons may have noticed that the “status” of a lot of our items has changed to “storage” in the catalog. All this means is they are not available for holds. You can still come to the Library and check them out. As we get closer to Dec. 8, this will happen to more portions of our collection. See “read more” for a fuller explanation.

If other libraries own the item you are looking for, place a hold on it just like you usually would. One of those libraries will send the item to us and you can pick it up here. You will always be able to do this, even after Dec. 8. If you need help placing holds, Reference is glad to help you. You might also want to attend Librarian Liam Hegarty’s talk Using the Catalog Effectively on either Dec. 4 or Dec. 5.

You can also call Reference at 834-2281 x. 3, and we will pull our copy and put it on the hold shelf for you. You cannot do this after December 7.

After Dec. 7, if we are the only library which owns a particular book, we may be able to borrow it from a university or public library outside Westchester County via Inter-Library Loan (ILL).

We need to change the “status” of these items so people won’t think they are available for checkout or for holds during the renovation. We at the Larchmont Public Library, have the ability to change or “modify” the “status” of individual items, one at a time. It would take us weeks to do that, though, as each item would have to be scanned separately.

The Westchester Library System has the power to “batch modify” whole chunks of our collection at once. This is more than just pushing a button, however. It takes a bunch of the computing power available to our “Integrated Library System” or ILS that manages the catalog and other back office functions for all the public libraries in the County. Therefore, the changes are done at night, when the libraries are closed and there are less demands on the ILS. Also, the ILS can only handle limited numbers of transactions at a time. There are only 9 business days until Dec. 8, so they are starting now.
