In an effort to bring materials back more quickly and make them available to more patrons, Westchester Library System libraries have reduced the time between when library materials become overdue and when a “Lost Notice” is sent. Lost Notices sound a little terrifying because they state “You are being billed for the replacement of these items.” Don’t worry, this is only true if you never return the overdue items. If you do return the item, you will only be responsible for the overdue charges. They max out at $5.00 per item. There are a few other things about lost items you should know:
- Unless it is irretrievably damaged, we always prefer getting back the item instead of its replacement cost.
- We generally do not accept replacements for lost items. The cheap replacement found on Amazon might not be the correct edition. It might be paperback instead of hardcover and so on.
- Policies regarding lost items vary from library to library in Westchester.
- We do not have facilities to accept credit card payments at the Library.
