Binge Times : Inside Hollywood’s Furious Billion-dollar Battle to Take Down Netflix with author Dade Hayes on Zoom or in person, in the Village Center
Thursday, June 16th at 7:00 pm. Join local author Dade Hayes for a discussion of his book Binge Times: Inside Hollywood’s Furious Billion-dollar Battle to Take Down Netflix. After spotting Netflix and the deep-pocketed Amazon Prime Video a decade’s head start, rivals from the tech and start-up realm (Apple, Quibi) and traditional media (Disney, WarnerMedia, NBCUniversal) all decided to move mountains to enter the streaming game. At a cost of billions, each went after their own piece of the market, launching five new services in a seven-month span. And just as the derby was heating up, the coronavirus pandemic arrived, a black-swan event bringing short-term benefits but also stiff challenges.
Dade Hayes has specialized in entertainment business coverage as a writer and editor for Deadline, Variety and Entertainment Weekly, among other outlets. At Deadline, where he is business editor, his purview includes financial and corporate news along with streaming, film, television, technology and advertising. In addition to Binge Times, the first account of the unprecedented boom in streaming, written with Dawn Chmielewski, Hayes has written two previous books: Open Wide (Hyperion) and Anytime Playdate (Free Press/Simon & Schuster). The New York Times, Los Angeles Times and Canada’s Globe & Mail have published Hayes as a freelance contributor. Wondery’s popular narrative podcast Business Wars has featured his original scripts, and he has appeared regularly on media outlets like NPR, the BBC and CNN. He lives in Larchmont (where he grew up and also worked for a time at the library) with his wife, the poet Stella Hayes, and their two children.
